सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी के वकील ने सुशांत केस में मुंबई कमिश्नर को लिखा पत्र, फ्लैट को सख्ती से सील किए जाने की मांग

सुशांत सिंह राजपूत की मौत के बाद से ही मुंबई पुलिस लगातार छानबीन में लगी हुई है मगर अब तक इस केस में कोई संदिग्ध बात या सबूत हाथ नहीं लगा है। हालांकि कुछ बड़ी हस्तियों इस मामले में सीबीआई जांच की मांग कर रही हैं। हाल ही में भाजपा सांसद सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी ने भी पीएम को खत लिखकर सुशांत का केस सीबीआई कों सौंपने की मांग करते हुए पॉपुलर वकील ईशकरण सिंह भंडारी को इसके लिए नियुक्त किया है। अब उनके वकील ने मुंबई कमिश्नर को लेटर लिखकर सुशांत का घर अच्छी तरह सील करवाने की मांग की है।

वकील ईशकरण सिंह भंडारी ने हाल ही में मुंबई के कमिश्नर परमबीर सिंह को एक लेटर लिखा। इसमें उन्होंने लिखा,' मैं आपको बताना चाहता हूं कि क्राइम सीन को सुरक्षित और सील किया जाए क्योंकि कई मीडिया रिपोर्ट्स में बताया जा रहा है कि फ्लैट अच्छी तरह सील नहीं किया गया है। मुंबई पुलिस द्वारा अब तक घर सील करवाने का कोई स्टेटमेंट भी नहीं दिया गया है। सही तरह से फ्लैट सील हो ताकि घर के साथ किसी भी तरह की छेड़छाड़ ना हो'। साथ ही उन्होंने सुशांत की सभी चीजों को भी संभालकर रखने की अपील की है।

सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी ने लिखा था पीएम को खत

इससे पहले भाजपा के सांसद सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी ने पीएम नरेंद्र मोदी को सुशांत मामले में खत लिखकर सीबीआई जांच की मांग की थी। उन्होंने लिखा, 'मेरे एसोसिएट इन लॉ ईशकरण भंडारी ने सुशांत सिंह राजपूत की मौत पर कुछ रिसर्च की है। हालांकि पुलिस एफआईआर दर्ज करने के बाद अब भी मामले की जांच कर रही है। मैंने मुंबई के अपने सूत्रों से सुना है कि इस मामले में बॉलीवुड के कई बड़े नाम दुबई के डॉन से जुडे़ हुए हैं, इसे पुलिस जांच के जरिए कवर-अप करना चाहते हैं। ताकि इसे अपनी मर्जी से की गई खुदकुशी साबित किया जा सके। महाराष्ट्र सरकार के पास ऐसे कई बड़े लोगों की राय है। जिनसे यह साबित हो जाए कि मिस्टर राजपूत ने खुदकुशी की है'।

आगे उन्होंने लिखा,'सरकार के हैट होने और मासूम लोगों के लिए आपके झुकाव को देखते हुए, मैं आपसे विनती करता हूं कि आप महाराष्ट्र के मुख्यमंत्री को सीधे या राज्यपाल के जरिए सीबीआई जांच के लिए सहमत कर सकते हैं। मुंबई पुलिस पहले ही कोरोना वायरस पैंडेमिक और दूसरे मामलों में व्यस्त है। जनता के भरोसे को बहाल करने के लिए सीबीआई जांच जरूरी है।'

वकील ने दिया न्याय दिलाने का आश्वासन

सीबीआई जांच की मांग के लिए नियुक्ति मिलने पर सुब्रमण्यम के वकील ईशकरण सिंह भंडारी ने ट्विटर के जरिए फैंस को न्याय दिलाने का आश्वासन दिया है। उन्होंने लिखा, 'कई लोगों ने सुशांत के मामले में न्याय पाने की उम्मीद खो दी है। तभी मैंने निर्णय लिया कि मैं लीगली इसपर काम करूंगा और यकीन दिलाउंगा कि सीबीआई जांच हो।'

इन सेलेब्स ने की मांग

सुशांत की मौत को सुसाइड का एंगल मिलते देख कई बड़ी हस्तियों ने इससे आपत्ति जताई है। सुब्रमण्यम स्वामी से पहले सुशांत की गर्लफ्रेंड रिया चक्रवर्ती, एक्ट्रेस रूपा गांगूली और शेखर सुमन लगातार सीबीआई जांच की मांग कर रही हैं। एक्ट्रेस से सांसद बनीं रूपा ने एक्टर के गले में फंदे से बने निशान और पलंग की ऊंचाई जैसी कई बात पर रोशनी डाली है। साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि यदि आम इंसान होते हुए उनके जहन में ऐसे सवाल आए हैं तो मुंबई पुलिस इस एंगल में कार्यवाही क्यों नहीं कर रही हैं।

नानावटी में भर्ती ऐश्वर्या-आराध्या की हालत में सुधार, दोनों को अमिताभ-अभिषेक वाली वीआईपी विंग में शिफ्ट किया गया

शुक्रवार देर रातमुंबई के नानावटी हॉस्पिटल में भर्ती ऐश्वर्या राय और उनकी बेटी आराध्या को आइसोलेशन वार्ड की उसी वीआईपी विंग में शिफ्ट कर दिया गया है, जहां उनके ससुर अमिताभ बच्चन और पति अभिषेक बच्चन का इलाज चल रहा है। सूत्रों से मिली जानकारी के मुताबिक, अस्पताल लाते वक्त ऐश्वर्या को तेज और आराध्या को हल्का बुखार था। हालांकि, अब दोनों की हालत में सुधार बताया जा रहा है।

इलाजके बाद बुखार कम हुआ

सूत्र ने बताया कि अस्पताल में ट्रीटमेंट देने के बाद ऐश्वर्या का बुखार कम हुआ है और उनके गले का इन्फेक्शन भी पहले से बेहतर है। उनकी हालत स्थिर है। दूसरी ओर आराध्या का बुखार लगभग चला गया है। दोनों को आइसोलेशन वार्ड में डॉ. बर्वे और डॉ. अंसारीकी निगरानी में रखा गया है। ये दोनों डॉक्टर ही लंबे समय से बच्चन परिवार के मेडिकल कंसल्टेंट हैं।

शुक्रवार को बिगड़ी थी ऐश्वर्या-आराध्या की तबीयत

ऐश्वर्या और आराध्या बीते रविवार (12 जुलाई) कोविड पॉजिटिव पाई गई थीं। हालांकि, उनमें हल्के लक्षण थे और उन्होंने किसी भी तरह की परेशानी से इनकार किया था। उन्हें उस समय न तो बुखार आया और न ही सांस लेने में तकलीफ थी। इसलिए कोविड-19 के क्वारैंटाइन नियमों के अनुसार उन्हें घर पर ही रखने का फैसला किया गया था।

शुक्रवार को अचानक दोनों की तबीयत बिगड़ने लगी तो परिवार चिंता में पड़ गया और उन्हें अस्पताल में भर्ती कराने का फैसला किया गया। शाम करीब 6 बजे पहले आराध्या को अस्पताल ले जाया गया। इसके बाद 8:30 बजे ऐश्वर्या को। ऐश्वर्या को सांस लेने में भी तकलीफ बताई जा रही थी, ऐसे मेंउनका सीटी स्कैन किया गया था।

लक्षणों के हिसाब से बच्चन परिवार

• एंटीजन टेस्ट में बीते शनिवार को पॉजिटिव पाए गए अमिताभ में कोराना के हल्के लक्षण थे। उन्हें बुखार भी था और उनका ऑक्सीजन लेवल भी गिरा हुआ था।
• अभिषेक बच्चन पूरी तरह से एसिम्प्टोमैटिक पाए गए और उनके लक्षण जाहिर नहीं हुए। इसके बावजूद एहतियातन वे अस्पताल में भर्ती हो गए।
• बीते रविवार को ऐश्वर्या और आराध्या के लक्षण भी एसिम्प्टोमैटिक थे और उन्हें कोई परेशानी नहीं थी। पूरे परिवार में सिर्फ जया ही दो बार टेस्ट में निगेटिव पाई गईं।
• जया के अलावा अमिताभ की बेटी श्वेता, उनकी नातिन नव्या नंदा और नाती अगस्त्य नंदा की रिपोर्ट निगेटिव आई थी। साथ ही उनके 26 स्टाफ मेंबर्स की स्वाब टेस्ट रिपोर्ट भी निगेटिव आई थी।

आज अस्पताल में अमिताभ-अभिषेक का 8वां दिन

अमिताभ और अभिषेक को अस्पताल में भर्ती हुए 7 दिन बीत चुके हैं। बीते शनिवार हल्के लक्षण दिखने के बाद 77 साल के अमिताभ को नानावटी हॉस्पिटल में भर्ती किया गया था।44 साल के अभिषेक खुद कार चलाकर उन्हें हॉस्पिटल ले गए थे। दोनों ने अपने कोविड पॉजिटिव होने की जानकारी ट्विटर पर साझा की थी।

अमिताभ ने लिखा था, ‘‘मैं कोरोना पॉजिटिव पाया गया हूं। अस्पताल में भर्ती हो चुका हूं। मेरे परिवार और स्टाफ के लोगों का टेस्ट हुआ है। उनकी रिपोर्ट का इंतजार है। पिछले 10 दिनों में मेरे संपर्क में आने वाले सभी लोगों से गुजारिश है कि वे अपना टेस्ट कराएं।’’

इसी तरह अभिषेक ने भी पिता और अपने कोविड पॉजिटिव होने की खबर फैन्स को दी थी और पैनिक न होने की अपील भी की थी। उन्होंने लिखा था, ‘‘आज हम दोनों, मेरे पिता और मैं कोविड 19 पॉजिटिव पाए गए हैं। हम दोनों को हल्के लक्षण थे, जिसके बाद हम अस्पताल में भर्ती हो गए हैं। हमने सभी जरूरी अथॉरिटीज को जानकारी दे दी है और हमारे परिवार औरस्टॉफ के सदस्यों का टेस्ट कराया जा रहा है। मैं सभी से शांत रहने और पैनिक न फैलाने की गुजारिश करता हूं। धन्यवाद।’’

सुशांत सिंह राजपूत की मौत के बाद से ही कंगना रनोट लगातार बॉलीवुड माफियाओं और इंडस्ट्री की कुछ नामी हस्तियों को लेकर बड़े खुलासे कर रही हैं। कंगना ने अपने कुछ वीडियोज शेयर कर करन जौहर और महेश भट्ट पर निशाना साधा था। उन्होंने कुछ ऐसी रिपोर्ट भी दिखाई हैं जिनमें सुशांत की छवि खराब करने की कोशिश की गई है। अब फिर एक बार एक्ट्रेस ने सुशांत मामले में बात करते हुए कहा है कि यदि इस मामले में किया गया उनका एक भी दावा झूठा निकलता है तो वो गौरवपूर्ण पद्मश्री अवॉर्ड वापस कर देंगी।

कंगना ने कुछ पुराने आर्टिक्ल दिखाते हुए वीडियो के जरिए कहा था कि सुशांत को इंडस्ट्री में लगातार रिजेक्शन और दबाव महसूस हो रहा था। सुशांत की मौत को एक्ट्रेस ने आत्महत्या नहीं बल्कि प्लान मर्डर बताया। अब इस मामले में रिपब्लिक टीवी कोदिए एक इंटरव्यू के दौरान कंगना ने कहा, 'मुंबई पुलिस ने मुझे बुलाया था और मैंने उनसे कहा था कि मैं मनाली में हूं इसीलिए आप मेरा स्टेटमेंट लेने के लिए किसी को भेज दीजिए। लेकिन उसके बाद मुझे कोई कॉल नहीं आया। अगर जो भी मैंने कहा है उसे में साबित नहीं कर पाई या गवाही नहीं दे पाई और अगर वो सब पब्लिक डोमेन में ना मिले तो मैं अपना पद्मश्री लौटा दूंगी'। गौरतलब है कि कंगना को 2020 में ही देश के चौथे सबसे गौरवपूर्ण पद्मश्री अवॉर्ड से नवाजा गया है।

आगे कंगना ने तापसी पन्नू और स्वरा भास्कर पर निशाना लगाते हुए कहा, 'आज तापसी और स्वरा जैसे जरुरतमंद आउटसाइडर्स उठेंगे और कहेंगे कि हमे इंडस्ट्री से प्यार है। मैं सिर्फ इतना कहना चाहती हूं कि अगर आपको इंडस्ट्री औरकरन जौहर से प्यार है तो आपको आलिया और अनन्या जितना काम क्यों नहीं मिल रहा है। उनकी उपस्थिती ही नेपोटिज्म का सबूत है। अब इसके बाद ऐसे आर्टिकल भी होंगे जो मुझे पागल दर्शाएंगे'।

मुंबई पुलिस से नहीं हुई कंगना की बात

कंगना ने इस बातचीत के दौरान मुंबई पुलिस द्वारा बुलाए जाने की बात कही है हालांकि 2 जुलाई को उनकी टीम ने ट्विटर पर ऐसी खबरों को गलत बताया था। उन्होंने लिखा-'मिस कंगना को अब तक मुंबई पुलिस की ओर से इस तरह की कोई रिक्वेस्ट नहीं आई है। लेकिन अगर आती है तो वो कॉर्डिनेट करेंगी'।

कंगना ने किए इंडस्ट्री से जुड़े कई खुलासे

14 जून को हुई सुशांत सिंह राजपूत की मौत के बाद कंगना ने दो वीडियो शेयर किए थे। इनमें उन्होंने बताया कि सुशांत ने काय पो छे, केदारनाथ और छिछौरी जैसी बेहतरीन फिल्में की थींं मगर उन्हें कभीस्वीकार नहीं किया गया और गली ब्वॉय जैसी घटिया फिल्म को सारे अवॉर्ड दिए गए। इसके बाद उन्होंने कुछ आर्टिकल के सबूत भी दिखाए जिसमें सुशांत के लिए काफी आपत्तिजनक बातें लिखी हैं।

वह उन्हें ट्रिब्यूट देना चाहती हैं तभी उन्होंने एकता कपूर को अप्रोच किया है। दरअसल, अंकिता ने एकता से बात कर यह इच्छा जताई है कि वह सीरियल पवित्र रिश्ता का दूसरा सीजनबनाएं।

अंकिता का मानना है कि पवित्र रिश्ता सुशांत के दिल के बेहद करीब था। इसी शो से उनके करियर को नई ऊंचाई मिली थी। ऐसे मेंअगर शो का दूसरा सीजन बनाया जाए तो सुशांत के लिएइससे बेहतर ट्रिब्यूट कुछ नहीं होगा।

एकता ने मानी बात: रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक,एकता को अंकिता काआइडिया पसंद आया है। उन्होंने अपनी राइटर टीम के साथ शो के दूसरे सीजन को लेकर ब्रेनस्टॉर्मिंग शुरू कर दी है। वह पर्सनली इस प्रोजेक्ट में इंटरेस्ट लेकर यह देख रही हैं कि दूसरे सीजन में शो को कैसे आगे बढ़ाया जाए।एकता इससे पहले हम पांच, कसौटी जिंदगी के और नागिन जैसे सुपरहिट शोज के सीक्वल बना चुकी हैं।

2009 में प्रसारित हुआ था शो: पवित्र रिश्ता में सुशांत ने मानव तो अंकिता ने अर्चना की भूमिका निभाई थी। दोनों ने मिडिल क्लास कपल की जद्दोजहद को इतनी सादगी से छोटे परदे पर उतारा था कि शो सुपरहिट साबित हुआ। इस शो के कुल 1424 एपिसोड प्रसारित हुए थे और अंतिम एपिसोड 25 अक्टूबर 2014 को प्रसारित हुआ था।

शो के दौरान ही करीब आए थे सुशांत-अंकिता: सुशांत और अंकिता की नजदीकियां भी इसी शो के दौरान बढ़ी थीं। वह तकरीबन छह साल रिलेशनशिप में रहे थे लेकिन 2016 में दोनों का ब्रेकअप हो गया था।

शो के बाद सुशांत को बॉलीवुड में अभिषेक कपूर की काय पो छे से ब्रेक मिल गया था। वहीं, अंकिता टेलीविजन पर ही एक्टिव रहीं। उन्हें अपना बॉलीवुड ब्रेक 2019 में मणिकर्णिका: द क्वीन ऑफ झांसी से मिला था। इसके बाद वह फिल्म बागी 3 में भी नजर आईं।

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his criticism of the government's foreign policy, saying that under Narendra Modi dispensation India's major partnerships are stronger, international standing higher and it engages China on more equal terms politically.

"Pakistan (that you skipped) surely notes the difference between Balakot and Uri on the one hand, and Sharm-el-Sheikh, Havana and 26/11 on the other. Ask yourself," Jaishankar said, attacking Rahul over his comments.

Jaishankar's no-holds-barred attack on Rahul came after the former Congress chief, in a video message posted on Twitter, hit out at the government saying that over the last six years, India has been "disturbed and disrupted" with regard to its foreign policy and economy.

Rahul shared his thoughts on why did China chose to be aggressive now and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "indiscretions" have weakened the country and left it vulnerable.

"Rahul Gandhi has questions on Foreign Policy. Here are some answers: Our major partnerships are stronger and international standing higher. Witness regular summits and informal meetings with US, Russia, Europe and Japan. India engages China on more equal terms politically. Ask the analysts," Jaishankar said in a series of tweets in which he made a point-by-point rebuttal of Rahul's criticism and tagged his video.

India speaks its mind more openly now on issues such as China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), China's Belt and Road initiative, South China Sea and UN-sanctioned terrorists, he said, adding, "ask the media".

"And some facts on our neighbourhood: The Hambantota Port agreement between Sri Lanka and China was concluded in 2008. Ask those who dealt with it...Difficult ties with Maldives, after India watched President Nasheed being toppled in 2012, now stand transformed. Ask our business," he said.

On Bangladesh, Jaishankar said a settled land boundary in 2015 which opens path to more development and transit.

"Terrorists no longer find safe haven there. Ask our security," he said.

"Nepal after 17 years is getting Prime Ministerial visits. And a swathe of developmental projects: power, fuel, housing, hospital, roads, etc. Ask their citizens," Jaishankar said, highlighting strengthening of India's ties with neighbours.

Bhutan finds a stronger security and development partner and unlike in 2013, they don't worry about their cooking gas, he asserted, referring to the row over cooking gas with that country under the UPA rule.

Ask the households in Bhutan, he added.

Afghanistan sees completed projects - Salma Dam and Parliament, expanded training and serious connectivity, Jaishankar said, adding that ask the Afghan street.

On India's foreign policy, Rahul had said the country had relationships with multiple countries and it used to share a strategic partnership with the US.

India also had a relationship with Russia and Europe and they used to help it manoeuvre in the world, he said.

"Today...we have a transactional relationship with the United States. We have disturbed our relationship with the Russians. We have a transactional relationship with Europe," he alleged.

He claimed that in the neighbourhood all countries, other than Pakistan, had been working with India and partnered with it in the past.

Rahul also alleged that today the Nepalese are angry, Sri Lankans have given a port to the Chinese, Maldives is disturbed and so is Bhutan.

These lines from Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem 'Dhaka Se Wapsi Par' (On Returning From Dhaka) describe the poet’s pain for his countrymen, divided by the then bloody civil war between West and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The sentiment transcends time, becoming the torment of the people who migrated during India’s own Partition, or even an echo of these uncertain times, where sealed global borders and lockdowns have separated loved ones from each other.

Yet, in the hope of a joyful union, Lahore-based Dr Salima Hashmi, the oldest daughter of Faiz, recites these lines in a virtual talk series, which is bringing India and Pakistan together while the COVID-19 pandemic rages on. Launched on 30 May, these weekly one-hour episodes are an initiative by 1947 Partition Archive – one of the foremost platforms to record people’s oral stories of India's Partition. From artists to scholars, the show, which is known as 'Sunday Stories Live', invites speakers from either side of the border to talk about the shared and lost history of the subcontinent.

For New Delhi-based Guneeta Singh Bhalla, the founder of the Partition Archive, it was the pandemic that enabled this talk show. She found herself forced to withdraw from plans of live events and rethink engagement in the digital space. Facebook Lives became a natural choice, as the Archive's page has one million followers from both sides of the border and the global diaspora.

"In mainstream politics and pop culture, Partition is often used as a test of someone's nationality and allegiance," says Bhalla, whose Archive has documented almost 10,000 stories since its inception in 2010. "Less than 1 percent of the people we interviewed migrated by choice. They still have love for their ancestral land. One of the purposes of the series is to bring forth this truth."

In the past seven episodes – recordings of which can be accessed on the Archive’s Facebook page – the speakers have included author Urvashi Butalia, whose book The Other Side of Silence is one of the first to narrate the oral history of Partition survivors, and Bhai Baldeep Singh, an eminent 13th-generation musician of Gurbani kirtan, who gave profound insights into the syncretic Hindu-Muslim musical traditions of undivided Punjab. Another episode saw a delightful camaraderie between professors Dr Ritu Kothari of New Delhi and Dr Farrukh Khan from Lahore, as they discuss teaching Partition to graduate students through regional histories that have entwined Hindus and Muslims for generations.

Most if not all the speakers seem to come from families of Partition migrants and have enduring cross-border stories of love and friendship to share. Yet the show hardly ever becomes purely sentimental, with the continued relevance of Partition remaining central to each session. “Partition is not a static event, it is an on-going journey,” Lahore-based Anam Zakaria, an oral historian and award-winning author of several books on the Partition, says in one of the early episodes of the series. Like many other speakers of the show, she talks of how Partition has enabled the “crystallisation of religious identities with nations” which “uproots people from the only home they have ever known.” “Pakistani children often find it hard to believe how Shah Rukh Khan can be Muslim and yet Indian,” says Zakaria while narrating an anecdote from one of her classroom interactions on the show.

Zakaria also points out other ways in which the “wounds” of Partition continue to fester – the struggles of divided families on either side of the border, the lynching of minorities, attacks on places of worship, and most recently, the Uttar Pradesh government’s brutalities on Sikh farmers in its state, who migrated to the area during Partition.

Is there a way ahead for peace and friendship? That is another question that continues to surface through the show.

“It is the writer, the actor, the filmmaker, the poet on whom the responsibility of peace rests,” 77-year-old Hashmi, now a renowned painter who migrated from Rawalpindi to Lahore during the Partition, tells her digital audience. “The role of the artist is to heal these fractures.”

In this last episode, Hashmi speaks about her own work in this regard, which involves repeated cross-border collaborations. Whether it’s joint exhibitions between Indian and Pakistani artists, fighting diplomatic hurdles so that her Pakistani students can travel to India and study the shared art legacy of the subcontinent, or her pivotal role in opening art scholarships to students from all parts of South Asia at Lahore’s Beaconhouse International University.

Upcoming sessions for the following few weeks will include discussions on teaching Partition in the UK, its representation in contemporary cinema and its continued psychological impacts. Bhalla hopes to run the show at least for the next few months, allowing it to “evolve with the audience and its needs". Some speakers and viewers have felt that much of the conversation on the show remains Punjab-centric, which Bhalla intends on changing by bringing in voices from Sindh, West Bengal and Bangladesh as well.

As for the future of the digital format of the show, for now it seems to have more advantages than live events. The Archive's Facebook page is able to draw a large global audience – an average of 10,000 viewers per episode – a high number compared to the footfall of live events that the Archive often hosted in New Delhi. There are also no diplomatic visa nightmares, which would have otherwise made it impossible to invite speakers from the other side of the border.

“As the Partition is a very sensitive and polarising subject, at live events one would often receive very offensive and one-sided questions from the audience,” says Delhi-based lawyer Noor Anand Chawla, who is also the moderator for the show. Chawla admits that while “trolls” do turn up at the digital show as well, the backend team makes sure their comments don’t pop up on the live screen. This leaves room for more nuanced questions to be answered during the 30-minute audience interactive session.

Chawla has noticed that many of the repeat attendees of the show are Partition survivors and their families. One such person is 80-year-old Bengaluru-based Harish Jagtiani, who hasn’t missed a single episode of the show and will continue to watch it for its “knowledgeable, articulate and objective” speakers. He hopes the show can also bridge a missing cultural legacy between himself and future generations. “These stories are often not told to those whose ancestors migrated from places like Sindh, where there was not much violence,” says Jagtiani, who migrated from Karachi to Bombay when he was just a boy of four. “Through the show I hope to share this with the young people in my extended family.”

For those of us who may not come from families with a Partition history, the show becomes a way of discovering cross-border connections that are scarce, if not altogether absent in propaganda-driven State narratives. Instead, the show reiterates what Hashmi considers is fast receding from public memory: “People from both sides of the border have far more in common than what divides them.”

1,894 fresh COVID-19 infections in Bengal 

West Bengal recorded 1,894 COVID-19 infections in a day, taking the overall count to 38,011 as on Friday. According to data provided by the government, there are 14,709 active cases.

In the past 24 hours, the state has recorded 26 deaths.

Of the new confirmed cases, 563 were recorded in Kolkata alone. Twelve more patients have succumbed to the viral infection in the city.

Kolkata extends ban on flights from 6 cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, 31 till July

The ban on passenger flights to Kolkata from six cities including Delhi and Mumbai has been extended till 31 July as confirmed cases continue to surge in West Bengal. 

All these cities are COVID-19 hotspots and have reported the highest number of cases in the country.

Earlier, flight operations to Kolkata from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Nagpur and Ahmedabad were suspended on the request of West Bengal government.

Kerala confirms community spread of COVID-91 in coastal areas

The Kerala government Friday confirmed the community transmission of coronavirus in two coastal areas in Thiruvananthapuram district. The development, which is indicative of the vulnerability of coastal areas to COVID-19, comes even as nearly 800 new cases were reported in the state in the past 24 hours with overall count surging pastexceeding 11,000.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, at the daily briefing, said community transmission of the coronavirus is observed to have taken place in the coastal neighbourhoods of Pulluvila and Poonthura in the capital district.

He also indicated that a complete lockdown is likely to be imposed in Thiruvananthapuram’s coastal areas.

India's tally of coronavirus cases crossed 10 lakh on Friday with 34,956 new patients testing positive, a new high in daily cases, on Friday while the toll rose to 25,602 with 687 casualties in 24 hours. Friday was the second consecutive day when the country reported over 3o,000 cases.

The Union health ministry said that the total count of cases stands at 10,03,832, including 3,42,473 active cases and 6,35,757 cured/discharged/migrated patients. The recovery rate stands at 63.33 percent.

Community spread of COVID-19 in Thiruvananthapuram, says Kerala CM

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday said that there is a community spreadof COVID-19 in some places in coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram, where a large number of cases have been reported. He said that a total lockdown will be implemented in the coastal areas from Saturday.

"The situation in some places in the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram district is serious as COVID-19 is spreading at a very fast rate. Large number of cases in these areas are an indication of the infection spread. We can say there is a community spread in these places. The government is taking steps to coordinate all the efforts to face this serious situation," Vijayan said at a press conference.

Vijayan added that community spread has occurred in two places in the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram district. Poonthura, Pulluvilla and its nearby places have seen a rapid increase in the number of contact cases, the chief minister said.

"We are moving to the next stage. There will be more restrictions in the capital district, where maximum number of cases have been reported. Of the 246 positive cases in the district today, only two came from abroad. 237 cases were due to contact. Four healthcare workers were also infected and the source of three cases is unknown. This is an unusual situation," Vijayan said.

Kerala reported 791 new COVID-19 cases, 133 recoveries and one death on Friday.

Karnataka govt says lockdown won't be extended in Bengaluru

Karnataka minister R Ashoka on Friday said that the COVID-19 lockdown will not be extended further in Bengaluru.

"We have taken expert opinion, and the lockdown will not be extended. It will end on 22 July," the minister said.

Earlier on Friday, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) mayor M Goutham Kumar called for an extension of lockdown in the city for one more week due to rise in the COVID-19 cases.

"It will be better if we get more time to tackle COVID-19 cases. We wish for the extension of lockdown for one more week. We have given the proposal to the government," said Kumar.

Lockdown had been imposed in the city for seven days with effect from 8 pm on 14 July till 5 am on 22 July to curb the further spread of COVID-19.

State-wise cases and deaths today

Maharashtra reported 8,308 new COVID-19 cases and 258 deaths on Friday. The total number of positive cases has risen to 2,92,589 including 1,60,357 recovered cases, 1,20,480 active cases and 11,452 deaths.

Tamil Nadu, which is the second worst-affected state in the country, reported 4,538 new cases and 79 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the state has risen to 1,60,907 including 47,782 active cases, 1,10,807 discharged cases and 2,315 deaths.

National Capital Delhi reported 1,462 new COVID-19 cases taking the total count to 1,20,107. The toll has risen to 3,571 after 26 deaths were reported today.

There are 17,235 active cases in Delhi and 99,301 patients have recovered till date.

A total of 3,693 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Karnataka on Friday, taking the total number of cases to 55,115 cases including 20,757 recoveries and 1,147 deaths. The state reported 115 deaths due to the virus.

Gujarat's COVID-19 count has risen to 45,481 including 32,103 discharged patients and 2,089 deaths. Meanwhile, Puducherry reported 91 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases has risen to 1,832 including 1,014 recoveries and 25 deaths.

Andhra Pradesh reported 2,602 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 40,646 including 20,298 and 534 deaths.

Uttarakhand reported 120 new COVID-19 positive cases today taking the total number of cases to 4,102. Himachal Pradesh reported 18 new COVID-19 cases today taking the total count of cases to 1,402 including 383 active cases, 995 recoveries and nine deaths.

With 25 new cases, the total number of cases has risen to 660 in Chandigarh. There are 169 active cases and 480 patients have been cured to date.

India now has India the third-highest total cases after the United States and Brazil. And according to an estimate by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, by the end of next year, India will be the worst-hit country in the world.

The Health Ministry, however, said that actual caseload of COVID-19 in the country is 3,42,756. It said only 1.94 percent of the cases are in ICUs, 0.35 percent cases are on ventilators and 2.81 percent cases are on oxygen beds.

"The actual caseload of COVID-19 cases in the country is only 3,42,756, as on date. More than 6.35 lakhs (63.33 percent) of the total cases have recovered. India, being the second-most populous country in the world with 1.35 billion people, has 727.4 cases per million. On the global scale, cases/million population in India are four to eight times less than some European countries," the ministry said in a release.

The ministry said that the case fatality rate at 18.6 deaths/million is one of the lowest in the world.

US military medics deployed in California, Texas as virus surges

Teams of military medics were deployed in Texas and California to help hospitals deluged by coronavirus patients as Miami area authorities began stepping up enforcement Friday of a mask requirement — echoing efforts in many parts of the world to contain surging infections, AP reported.

In California, military doctors, nurses and other health care specialists were being deployed to eight hospitals facing staffing shortages amid a record-breaking case numbers. In Houston, an 86-person Army medical team worked to take over a wing of United Memorial Medical Center.

Several states have been reporting record numbers this week, contributing to a surge in the national death rate. The seven-day rolling average for daily new deaths has risen 34 percent from two weeks ago, while the case count in that period shot up 43 percent.

शुक्रवार को जहां एक तरफ नवाजुद्दीन सिद्दीकी की अगली फिल्‍म रात अकेली है का ट्रेलर जारी हुआ, वहीं उनकी पत्‍नी अंजना आनंद किशोर पांडे ने नवाज के 'ताल्‍लुकातों' की ऑडियो और वीडियो जारी करने का ऐलान किया। यह ऐलान नवाज के भाइयों व उनकी पत्‍नियों के उन आरोपों के बाद हुआ है, जिसमें अंजना को कटघरे में खड़ा करने की बात कही गई। नवाज के भाइयों की बीवीओं ने बाकायदा 6 जुलाई को नोटिस भी भिजवाए हैं। उनमें सबा, शाइस्‍ता, गुलनाज, आफरीन ने अंजना को झूठा बताया है। सभी ने अंजना के आरोपों को सिरे से खारिज करते हुए कहा कि सिद्दीकी परिवार की बहुओं के साथ टॉर्चर नहीं हुआ । इतना ही नहीं सबने अंजना को पैसों का भूखा भी बताया है।

मेरे सब्र टूट चुका हैः अंजना

इस पर अंजना ने दैनिक भास्‍कर के सामने अपना पक्ष रखा। उन्‍होंने कहा, 'मैं चाहती तो नहीं थी, मगर अब सिद्दीकी परिवार ने मेरे सामने कोई चारा नहीं रखा है। मुझे पता है कि सबा, शाइस्‍ता, गुलनाज, आफरीन ने नवाज के भाइयों के दबाव में आकर इस तरह के बयान दिए हैं। मैं अब वे सारे ऑडियो व वीडियो जारी करने वाली हूं, जिनमें मेरी और फैजुद्दीन की बातें है। शमास से भी बातों की रिकॉर्डिंग हैं, जिसमें नवाज के एक्‍स्‍ट्रा मैरिटल अफेयर की बातें हैं। परिवार में औरतों पर जुल्‍म ढाने की बातें हैं। मैं अब तक चुप थी, मगर अब सिद्दीकी भाइयों ने मेरे सब्र का पूरा इम्तिहान ले लिया है।'

नवाज के थे बॉलीवुड एक्ट्रेस से रिश्तेः अंजना

आगे उन्होंने कहा, अब अगर मैं चुप रही और दुनिया को उनकी कारगुजारियां नहीं दिखा पाईं तो इसके अलग मतलब निकाले जाएंगे। नवाज के एक्‍स्‍ट्रा मैरिटल अफेयर इंडस्‍ट्री की हीरोइनों से भी रहे हैं। उनके नाम जाहिर होगें तो यकीनन हड़कंप मचने वाला है। नवाज के भाइयों ने तो यह तक जाहिर किया था कि भाभी आप के मर्डर तक की प्‍लानिंग की गई थी। यह सब बातें ऑन रिकॉर्ड फोन कॉल्‍स में हैं। वीडियो घर के कैमरों में रिकॉर्ड हैं। अब सब पब्लिक के सामने रखूंगी। दूध का दूध और पानी का पानी करूंगी।

कुछ दिनों पहले बदले अंदाज में आईं थी नजर

इन दिनों ऑडियो-वीडियो रिलीज करने की धमकी दे रहीं अंजना के बोल कुछ दिनों पहले नवाज को लेकर काफी सकारात्मक थे। 23 जून को भास्कर को दिए एक इंटरव्यू के दौरान अंजना ने नवाजुद्दीन से जुड़ी कई भावुक बातें शेयर की थीं। उन्होंने बताया कि कैसे दोनों ने संघर्ष के दिनों में एक दूसरे का साथ दिया।

संघर्ष के दिनों में दिया एक दूसरे का साथ

सुशांत की मौत का कारण कई जगह पर उनका स्ट्रगल माना जा रहा है। इसी बीच अंजना ने नवाज के संघर्ष पर कहा, उन्होंने 16 साल संघर्ष किया है। उन 16 सालों में हमने कभी निराशा नाम का शब्द उनकी जुबान से तो कभी ना सुना। हम दोनों बहुत जुनून के साथ सही अवसर का इंतजार कर रहे थे। काम नहीं होता था। गाड़ी थी नहीं हमारे पास तो हम लोग घर में ही बैठकर दिन- रात भर बातें किया करते थे, फिल्मों पर बातें होती थीं। आत्महत्या तो बहुत दूर की बात है। कभी उन्हें निराश देखा ही नहीं। कुछ ना कुछ करने में लगे पड़े रहते थे। जगह छोड़नी तो नहीं है। मैं जब तक उनके साथ थी, कभी सुसाइड या डिप्रेशन के भाव उनमें नहीं देखे। खाने के भी लाले पड़े होते थे। पर हम दोनों काफी खुश रहते थे। बड़ा गोल्डन टाइम था हम दोनों की लाइफ में।

फाइटिंग स्पिरिट कहां से लाते थे नवाज?

(हंसते हुए) स्ट्रगल के फेस में ही जब आप को खूबसूरत लड़की मिल जाए जो आपसे बेशुमार प्यार करे, बिना किसी शर्त के। आप दिनभर ऑडिशन देकर थक हार कर आओ और फिर रात को अच्छा खाना मिल रहा है तो किसी की भी फाइटिंग स्पिरिट दोगुनी हो ही जाती है। उनकी उस वक्त अच्छी खासी उम्र थी। मैं बस 20 -22 साल की थी। स्ट्रगल तो तब कहा जाए ना, जब आपकी लाइफ में कुछ होता ही नहीं है। उनकी जिंदगी में मैं पहले से ही थी। आधा स्ट्रगल वैसे ही कम था। अनीता (नवाज की एक्स गर्लफ्रेंड) ने उन्हें छोड़ दिया था क्योंकि वो स्ट्रगलर थे। उस पेज में अचानक 20-22 साल की लड़की का जिंदगी में आ जाना, इससे उनके आधे दुख तो खत्म थे।

कभी आप दोनों के बीच भी तू तू मैं मैं हुई?

ज्यादातर तो हम सब हंसी खुशी साथ रहते थे। हम लोगों की भी जिंदगी में प्रॉब्लम्स होती थीं। मैं निकल जाती थी कमरे से। कभी मैं नाराज होती थी तो वह मना लेते थे। उन्होंने कभी मुझे छोड़ना नहीं चाहा। यह बात मुझे अच्छी लगी थी। बहरहाल, शादी के बाद उनके भाई उनकी फैमिली को रिस्पेक्ट करना नहीं आया और नौबत यहां तक पहुंची।

यानी डोमेस्टिक वायलेंस कभी नहीं हुआ?

जी हां, मैंने कभी नहीं कहा कि उन्होंने मुझे मारा या टॉर्चर किया लेकिन उन्हें कभी फीमेल की रिस्पेक्ट करना नहीं आया। उन्होंने अपने अपने भाई अपनी फैमिली की वजह से घर खराब कर लिया।

बहन और मां के साथ सेलिब्रेट करेंगी भूमि

इस बार जन्‍मदिन अलग तरह से स्‍पेशल रहने वाला है। वह यूं कि मैं किसी से नहीं मिल रही। अपने परिवार के साथ घर पर ही रहने वाली हूं। बर्थडे प्‍लान बड़े सिंपल और बेसिक रहने वाले हैं। इस महामारी के चलते प्रभावित लोगों की जिंदगियां बेहतर हो जाएं, वैक्‍सीन आ जाए, वही इस जन्‍मदिन की सबसे बेहतर सौगात होगी। यबीते सालों में मैं इसका सेलिब्रेशन बड़े धूमधाम से करती थी, अपने चाहने वालों को बुलाती ही थी। लोग मुझे पैंपर करें, बड़ा अच्‍छा लगता है। इस बार मैं बस अपनी मां और बहन के साथ रहने वाली हूं। हां संभवत: जूम कॉल पर अपने चाहने वालों की दुआएं हासिल कर लूंगी।

काम और सेट को कर रही हैं मिस

जिंदगी में व्‍यस्‍तता तो रही है। पर मुझे परिवार के साथ वक्‍त बिताना अच्‍छा लगता है। साथ ही में शूटिंग और सेट्स को मिस तो कर ही रही हूं। काम को मिस कर रही हूं। उम्‍मीद है कि जल्‍द सब पहले की तरह हो जाए। ऐसा मुमकिन होता नजर आ रहा है। लोग वायरस के साथ तालमेल बना रहे हैं।

लॉकडाउन में क्रिएटिव काम करके बिता रही हैं समय

बाकी क्रिएटिव लोगों की तरह मैंने भी खुद को रचनात्‍मक कामों में व्‍यस्‍त रखा है। कुछ अलग हुनर में हाथ आजमाए हैं। कुकिंग और घर के बाकी कामों में हाथ बंटाए। इन सबके अलावा ढेर सारा लिख रही हूं। खूब किताबें पढ़ रही हूं। जमकर मेडिटेशन भी किया। इन सब ने मुझे खासा व्‍यस्‍त रखा। मैंने काफी डि‍जिटल करार भी किए इन महीनों में। इन सबने मुझे जाहिर तौर पर काफी व्‍यस्‍त रखा।

बहन के साथ करती हैं पागलपंती

बीते चार महीनों ने परिवार के साथ रहने में काफी मदद की। ऐसे में कई नए पहलुओं के बारे में भी जानने का मौका मिला। सब साथ मिलकर कुकिंग से लेकर रीडिंग करते रहे। जाना कि मेरी बहन को काम से संबंधित किन चीजों की जरूरत है। वह मुझसे दस गुना ज्‍यादा काम करती है। जबसे लॉकडाउन हुआ है उसे कभी काम से ब्रेक लेते नहीं देखा है। सिर्फ नाश्‍ते और चाय पर हम दो घंटे साथ बैठ पाते रहे। उस दौरान आपस के जज्‍बात शेयर किए। थोड़ी बहुत पागलपंती भी की।

'Ask the analysts': S Jaishankar rebuts Rahul Gandhi's criticism of India's foreign policy, economy on Twitter

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his criticism of the government's foreign policy, saying that under Narendra Modi dispensation India's major partnerships are stronger, international standing higher and it engages China on more equal terms politically.

"Pakistan (that you skipped) surely notes the difference between Balakot and Uri on the one hand, and Sharm-el-Sheikh, Havana and 26/11 on the other. Ask yourself," Jaishankar said, attacking Rahul over his comments.

Jaishankar's no-holds-barred attack on Rahul came after the former Congress chief, in a video message posted on Twitter, hit out at the government saying that over the last six years, India has been "disturbed and disrupted" with regard to its foreign policy and economy.

Rahul shared his thoughts on why did China chose to be aggressive now and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "indiscretions" have weakened the country and left it vulnerable.

"Rahul Gandhi has questions on Foreign Policy. Here are some answers: Our major partnerships are stronger and international standing higher. Witness regular summits and informal meetings with US, Russia, Europe and Japan. India engages China on more equal terms politically. Ask the analysts," Jaishankar said in a series of tweets in which he made a point-by-point rebuttal of Rahul's criticism and tagged his video.

India speaks its mind more openly now on issues such as China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), China's Belt and Road initiative, South China Sea and UN-sanctioned terrorists, he said, adding, "ask the media".

"And some facts on our neighbourhood: The Hambantota Port agreement between Sri Lanka and China was concluded in 2008. Ask those who dealt with it...Difficult ties with Maldives, after India watched President Nasheed being toppled in 2012, now stand transformed. Ask our business," he said.

On Bangladesh, Jaishankar said a settled land boundary in 2015 which opens path to more development and transit.

"Terrorists no longer find safe haven there. Ask our security," he said.

"Nepal after 17 years is getting Prime Ministerial visits. And a swathe of developmental projects: power, fuel, housing, hospital, roads, etc. Ask their citizens," Jaishankar said, highlighting strengthening of India's ties with neighbours.

Bhutan finds a stronger security and development partner and unlike in 2013, they don't worry about their cooking gas, he asserted, referring to the row over cooking gas with that country under the UPA rule.

Ask the households in Bhutan, he added.

Afghanistan sees completed projects - Salma Dam and Parliament, expanded training and serious connectivity, Jaishankar said, adding that ask the Afghan street.

On India's foreign policy, Rahul had said the country had relationships with multiple countries and it used to share a strategic partnership with the US.

India also had a relationship with Russia and Europe and they used to help it manoeuvre in the world, he said.

"Today...we have a transactional relationship with the United States. We have disturbed our relationship with the Russians. We have a transactional relationship with Europe," he alleged.

He claimed that in the neighbourhood all countries, other than Pakistan, had been working with India and partnered with it in the past.

Rahul also alleged that today the Nepalese are angry, Sri Lankans have given a port to the Chinese, Maldives is disturbed and so is Bhutan.

The coronavirus pandemic gave 1947 Partition Archive an unlikely shot in the arm — a series with speakers from both sides of the border

“Hum keh thehre ajnabi itni madaraton ke baad
Phir banenge aashnaa kitni mulaqaton ke baad

Kab nazar mein aayengi be-dagh sabze ki bahaar
Khoon ke dhabbe dhulenge kitni barsaaton ke baad”

(We who are like strangers, after all the time gone by,
Will we know one and another again and after how many meetings more?

And will there be spring when the green is all unblighted?
And how many rains must fall before the stains of blood are washed clean?)

These lines from Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem 'Dhaka Se Wapsi Par' (On Returning From Dhaka) describe the poet’s pain for his countrymen, divided by the then bloody civil war between West and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The sentiment transcends time, becoming the torment of the people who migrated during India’s own Partition, or even an echo of these uncertain times, where sealed global borders and lockdowns have separated loved ones from each other.

Yet, in the hope of a joyful union, Lahore-based Dr Salima Hashmi, the oldest daughter of Faiz, recites these lines in a virtual talk series, which is bringing India and Pakistan together while the COVID-19 pandemic rages on. Launched on 30 May, these weekly one-hour episodes are an initiative by 1947 Partition Archive – one of the foremost platforms to record people’s oral stories of India's Partition. From artists to scholars, the show, which is known as 'Sunday Stories Live', invites speakers from either side of the border to talk about the shared and lost history of the subcontinent.

For New Delhi-based Guneeta Singh Bhalla, the founder of the Partition Archive, it was the pandemic that enabled this talk show. She found herself forced to withdraw from plans of live events and rethink engagement in the digital space. Facebook Lives became a natural choice, as the Archive's page has one million followers from both sides of the border and the global diaspora.

"In mainstream politics and pop culture, Partition is often used as a test of someone's nationality and allegiance," says Bhalla, whose Archive has documented almost 10,000 stories since its inception in 2010. "Less than 1 percent of the people we interviewed migrated by choice. They still have love for their ancestral land. One of the purposes of the series is to bring forth this truth."

In the past seven episodes – recordings of which can be accessed on the Archive’s Facebook page – the speakers have included author Urvashi Butalia, whose book The Other Side of Silence is one of the first to narrate the oral history of Partition survivors, and Bhai Baldeep Singh, an eminent 13th-generation musician of Gurbani kirtan, who gave profound insights into the syncretic Hindu-Muslim musical traditions of undivided Punjab. Another episode saw a delightful camaraderie between professors Dr Ritu Kothari of New Delhi and Dr Farrukh Khan from Lahore, as they discuss teaching Partition to graduate students through regional histories that have entwined Hindus and Muslims for generations.

Most if not all the speakers seem to come from families of Partition migrants and have enduring cross-border stories of love and friendship to share. Yet the show hardly ever becomes purely sentimental, with the continued relevance of Partition remaining central to each session. “Partition is not a static event, it is an on-going journey,” Lahore-based Anam Zakaria, an oral historian and award-winning author of several books on the Partition, says in one of the early episodes of the series. Like many other speakers of the show, she talks of how Partition has enabled the “crystallisation of religious identities with nations” which “uproots people from the only home they have ever known.” “Pakistani children often find it hard to believe how Shah Rukh Khan can be Muslim and yet Indian,” says Zakaria while narrating an anecdote from one of her classroom interactions on the show.

Zakaria also points out other ways in which the “wounds” of Partition continue to fester – the struggles of divided families on either side of the border, the lynching of minorities, attacks on places of worship, and most recently, the Uttar Pradesh government’s brutalities on Sikh farmers in its state, who migrated to the area during Partition.

Is there a way ahead for peace and friendship? That is another question that continues to surface through the show.

“It is the writer, the actor, the filmmaker, the poet on whom the responsibility of peace rests,” 77-year-old Hashmi, now a renowned painter who migrated from Rawalpindi to Lahore during the Partition, tells her digital audience. “The role of the artist is to heal these fractures.”

In this last episode, Hashmi speaks about her own work in this regard, which involves repeated cross-border collaborations. Whether it’s joint exhibitions between Indian and Pakistani artists, fighting diplomatic hurdles so that her Pakistani students can travel to India and study the shared art legacy of the subcontinent, or her pivotal role in opening art scholarships to students from all parts of South Asia at Lahore’s Beaconhouse International University.

Upcoming sessions for the following few weeks will include discussions on teaching Partition in the UK, its representation in contemporary cinema and its continued psychological impacts. Bhalla hopes to run the show at least for the next few months, allowing it to “evolve with the audience and its needs". Some speakers and viewers have felt that much of the conversation on the show remains Punjab-centric, which Bhalla intends on changing by bringing in voices from Sindh, West Bengal and Bangladesh as well.

As for the future of the digital format of the show, for now it seems to have more advantages than live events. The Archive's Facebook page is able to draw a large global audience – an average of 10,000 viewers per episode – a high number compared to the footfall of live events that the Archive often hosted in New Delhi. There are also no diplomatic visa nightmares, which would have otherwise made it impossible to invite speakers from the other side of the border.

“As the Partition is a very sensitive and polarising subject, at live events one would often receive very offensive and one-sided questions from the audience,” says Delhi-based lawyer Noor Anand Chawla, who is also the moderator for the show. Chawla admits that while “trolls” do turn up at the digital show as well, the backend team makes sure their comments don’t pop up on the live screen. This leaves room for more nuanced questions to be answered during the 30-minute audience interactive session.

Chawla has noticed that many of the repeat attendees of the show are Partition survivors and their families. One such person is 80-year-old Bengaluru-based Harish Jagtiani, who hasn’t missed a single episode of the show and will continue to watch it for its “knowledgeable, articulate and objective” speakers. He hopes the show can also bridge a missing cultural legacy between himself and future generations. “These stories are often not told to those whose ancestors migrated from places like Sindh, where there was not much violence,” says Jagtiani, who migrated from Karachi to Bombay when he was just a boy of four. “Through the show I hope to share this with the young people in my extended family.”

For those of us who may not come from families with a Partition history, the show becomes a way of discovering cross-border connections that are scarce, if not altogether absent in propaganda-driven State narratives. Instead, the show reiterates what Hashmi considers is fast receding from public memory: “People from both sides of the border have far more in common than what divides them.”
